Kassel University
Kassel University is a member of EUREC Agency since 1998.
The department of Efficient Energy Conversion (IEE-RE) coordinates the contact with EUREC and is responsible for the hybrid system specialization course. The department focuses on renewable and rational energy use in research and education.
Main topics are energy supply systems without connection to an electricity grid for applications in rural areas like mountainous regions and locations in developing countries. Such supply systems typically combine generation from renewable energy sources like solar (photovoltaic), wind, hydro and bio energy and are called hybrid systems.
Other main topics of our department are on one hand energy savings in office buildings, industry and within energy conversion processes and on the other hand the integration of higher renewable energy shares in the European electricity grid.
All these activities include the further development of energy management techniques.
For the hybrid system specialization course the department “Rationelle Energiewandlung” (Efficient Energy Conversion, IEE-RE) collaborates with other departments of Kassel University and its institute in particular and with the “Institut für Solare Energieversorgungstechnik” (ISET).
ISET as our most important partner is one of the major German research institutes for renewable energies and is also located close to our University department in Kassel.
Practical Information
Location
The city of Kassel with about 200,000 inhabitants is located in the North of the federal state of Hessen, quite close to the geographical centre of Germany. It is very well connected to the Autobahn and German railway system at the respective main route between north and south. Kassel city is situated in the Fulda river valley and embedded in the northern part of the „Mittelgebirge“ (low mountain range) surrounded by mountains up to 600 m. Famous are the „Bergpark“ between the „Schloss Wilhelmshöhe“ (castle, have a look at http://www.kassel.de/cms02/stadt/) and the “Herkules” statue which offers a nice view over the city and the „Wilhelmshöher Allee“, which connects the castle and the city centre in a direct way. Also the “Fulda Auen” in the city with the “Orangerie” are a nice place for recreation within the city. The surrounding mountains and cities are the location for the „Märchen“ of the brothers Grimm which had been staying in Kassel for many years collecting the famous fairy tales. Organisational questions
We will help prospective students with all organisational questions. You will receive a guideline about what to do before and after arrival. If you want to get our guidelines or if you have other questions, please contact us by e-mail: re-master@uni-kassel.de
Accommodation
In general there are several possibilities concerning housing at Kassel University: apartments, single rooms and shared flats nearby the University. The guidelines provide you with links and an overview about the actual situation.
Health insurance
Students are required to have a minimum level of health insurance to meet the legal requirements of the University of Kassel..
Other
For studying in Kassel Students must pay tuition fees, which costs about 200 € per semester. It includes a student ID or “Studentenausweis” which allows students to use public transport in Kassel and the North of the federal state of Hessen (“Nordhessischer Verkehrsverbund” (= NVV)) for free, it reduces entrance fees, prices in the university cafeteria and Mensa (university restaurant) etc.
Preparatory Knowledge
All basic knowledge will at least briefly be repeated and treated in lectures, exercises and labs, which allows students to catch up on missing knowledge.
PV lab with with EUREC Master students of 2003 (below).
