University of Northumbria at Newcastle

Northumbria University has been a member of EUREC Agency since 1991. Research, Education and training in Photovoltaics is carried out at the Northumbria Photovoltaics Application Centre (NPAC). This centre was established in 1984 to provide an expert research and consultancy service in Photovoltaics. It is part of the School of Engineering and Technology.

Research Activities

Research activities at NPAC focuses on the following aspects of photovoltaics:

  • Design and development of building integrated photovoltaic systems
  • Performance monitoring and analysis
  • Development of thin film solar cell devices and manufacturing processes
  • Solar cell testing and characterisation
  • Environmental assessment of PV manufacturing and implementation
  • Information dissemination and demonstration programmes

NPAC is equipped with a Photovoltaic Cell Test Facility, which includes two Class A terrestrial solar simulators.
