- Processes,models and modelling sustainable fuel production and supply chain(s).This module addresses the optimization of chains by modelling it with a set of constraints (e.g. economic parameters). Lab tools (e.g. modellica) will be used for assignments about constraint based optimization of chains.
- Biochemical Conversion. This module aims to give a broad understanding in the various biological processes involved in the conversion of biomass into biofuels. Biomass can be converted into various types of biofuels, including Bio-methane, Bio-ethanol, Bio-hydrogen and Bio-diesel. In addition, end-use specifications for biofuels are addressed, since biofuels have different properties than conventional fuels, with a goal to ensure clean and efficient utilization. Basic Biochemistry - The making of renewable fuels - The use of biofuels
- Thermochemical conversion. This module will cover the relevant methods to convert biomass into biofuels through thermochemical conversion. The processes and conditions will be described with their mass and energy balances and efficiency. Practical experiences and status of the developments will be outlined. Good and bad combinations of technology and feedstock will be explained. The economy of the processes will shortly be touched upon. Other subjects covered in this module include: modelling, chemical analyses, reactor design. Finally, some new developments will be described. The following processes are covered: Gasification, Torrefaction, Flash pyrolysis, Hydrothermallique faction.
- New Business Development. This module will present the context factors of sustainable fuel systems. It will cover European and international law and regulations (what is allowed under what conditions; how about liability), system modeling (when apply, what, why, consequences), as well as outline the systematics of feasibility studies of possible solutions. The aim is to deepen the knowledge of the ‘softer side’ of renewable fuel systems, with topics as:
- Performing and interpreting life cycle -analyses, -design and -engineering;
- Provisioning an overview of legal aspects (law and regulations) and Environmental Impact Analyses (EIA) of fuel systems and mobility in Europe (production and use) and risks associated with fuel production, storage and use;
- Overview of the concepts of sustainability,cradle-to-cradle, circular economy, resource management and ‘time’ in relationship to energy transition, fuel and mobility;- Awareness of the aspects of systems dimensions:regional, national, European and beyond;
- Awareness of the aspects and issues in the social acceptance of sustainable fuels. The other (main) part of this module applies theory into practice by performing application project(s) such as Algae, Biochemical.

The specialisation connects several major industrial sectors: energy, chemistry, and food. The policy forms a crucial boundary condition and is expected to remain important for biomass/biofuels developments for some time. The graduated student can be employed at companies over the entire fuel chain, not only in R&D related work, but also in application related work or as entrepreneur or as high-level employee.

Hanze University of Applied Sciences Energy Research Center is the biggest knowledge institute in the north of the Netherlands. The focus is on strategic themes: Healthy, Ageing and Energy. Professorships and schools are carrying out applied research, bringing discoveries into development.
Fossil energy is increasingly scarce and does not help to reach the goals of reducing CO2 production. Renewable energy is not predictable. How to develop new energy systems that can meet the demand?
The Energy Research Center was founded in 2005 and led by Dr. Wim van Gemert, Professor in Energy transition. His philosophy is that the people in power support consumers in their energy needs and in an increasingly sustainable manner.

Hanze UAS is located in Groningen, a lively student city in the north east of the Netherlands, 40 kilometers from the German border and ca 180 kilometers from Amsterdam. As a prospective international student you are on the doorstep of a great adventure: studying and living in the Netherlands.
